Abstract: Liquid ammonia treated-cotton was treated with maleic-itaconic acid easy care finishing agent containing nano-particles with different sizes. The breaking strength, wrinkle recovery angles, tearing strength, whiteness and surface topography of treated-fabrics were tested, and the synergistic effect of between the nano-particles and the softener were discussed. The results show that nano-particles can enhance the breaking strength of liquid ammonia treated cotton fabrics, and have subtle effect on the whiteness of fabrics. The addition of nano-silica with particle size of 30nm can reduce the wrinkle recovery angles and tearing strength of the fabrics, while the addition of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) with particle size of 1.5nm can improve the wrinkle recovery angles without significantly affecting tearing strength of fabrics. The difference easy care properties of fabric was because particles with different sizes can penetrate into different areas of the fibres. Easy care cotton fabrics with excellent physical and mechanical properties can be obtained by finishing with 60 g/L maleic-itaconic acid easy care finishing agent containing 2% POSS and then using 20 g/L softener.
