Abstract: This study compared the properties of calcium alginate nonwoven dressings and woven cotton gauzes. The absorption capacities, fluid spreading and moisture vapour transmission in solution A were measured. The results showed that because of the different chemical and physical structures, the properties of alginate dressing and cotton gauze differ a lot, hence these two products can be used on different types of wounds.Due to the high absorption capacity and the ability to control fluid spreading, the alginate dressings can be used on chronic wounds with high levels of exudates, while the cotton gauze can be used to absorb blood during surgery.
