Abstract: Sketching is the initial design tool for garment design. The designer can rapidly express his (or her) design ideas by sketching some strokes of garments on paper. In this paper the traditional sketch-based design method by paper and pencil and the modern computer aided design method are combined. A sketch-based garment pattern design system, dubbed ClothDesign, is developed. Firstly, the contour of the garment pattern is sketched by pen-based interaction mode. Secondly, the sketching contour is segmented and reconstructed automatically. Some key information, such as vertexes data, edges data and pattern structure information of the sketching garment pattern, is obtained. The interpolation points on the contour of the sketching garment pattern and inside the contour are generated by using the interpolation method. Thirdly, the triangular meshes are generated by using the improved Delaunay triangulation algorithm. Finally, the texture is added on the triangular meshes of the garment pattern in order to improve the reality of the garment pattern. Some examples verified the high efficiency of the proposed algorithms. The sketching design garment pattern can be directly used in the next virtual stitching and garment show stages.
